Step 4: Install Your Chosen Server

Most MCP servers install via npm or Docker. The typical pattern:

Step 5: Verify the Connection

Start Claude Code and confirm the MCP server is connected:

Building an MCP Server Stack

Most Claude Code workflows need 2-4 MCP servers. Here are recommended stacks by project type:

Web application development:

  1. Database server (PostgreSQL or SQLite)
  2. GitHub server (for PR and issue management)
  3. Fetch server (for calling external APIs)

Data science and analytics:

  1. Database server (for querying data)
  2. Filesystem server (for accessing data files outside the project)
  3. Memory server (for persisting analysis context between sessions)

DevOps and infrastructure:

  1. Docker server (for container management)

Evaluating Server Quality

Before installing any server from the directory, check these signals:

Documentation quality: Open the server’s README. It should include clear installation instructions, configuration examples, supported operations, and known limitations. Poor documentation usually means poor maintenance.

Issue response time: Check the Issues tab. If the maintainer responds to issues within a week, the server is actively maintained. If issues sit unanswered for months, consider alternatives.

Test coverage: Servers with tests are more reliable. Check for a test directory or CI badges in the README.

Claude Code compatibility: Some MCP servers are built for other clients (Zed, Cursor) and may not work perfectly with Claude Code. Check for explicit Claude Code support in the documentation.

Troubleshooting

Server not connecting: Check that the command path is correct and the server binary is on your PATH. Try running the server command directly in the terminal to see error output. On macOS, check that the binary has execution permissions.

Too many options in a category: Sort by GitHub stars within the category. The highest-starred option is usually the safest starting point. If multiple servers have similar star counts, pick the one with the most recent commit.

Server works but is slow: Some MCP servers add significant latency. If a server adds more than 2 seconds to responses, check if there is a lighter alternative in the same category. Also verify that the server is connecting to local resources when possible (e.g., localhost database vs remote).

Server conflicts with another: Two MCP servers providing the same tool names will conflict. Only install one server per capability type. If you need both, check if one offers a namespacing or prefix option.
