The Claude Code ecosystem is entirely community-built. Every skill, hook template, MCP server, and documentation resource comes from developers sharing what works. This guide covers how to contribute effectively across the major repositories.

Contribution Types

Type 1: CLAUDE.md Templates

The easiest contribution. Share a CLAUDE.md configuration that solves a specific problem.

Share hook configurations that automate common tasks.

Type 3: MCP Servers

Build a new MCP server for a service not yet covered. The awesome-mcp-servers repo lists 200+ servers — check for gaps in your domain.

Checklist for a quality MCP server:

  • README with installation and configuration
  • TypeScript/Python source with types
  • Published to npm/PyPI
  • At least 3 tools exposed
  • Error handling for auth failures and timeouts
  • Security: no hardcoded secrets, minimal permissions
  • Tests covering core functionality

Type 4: Slash Commands

Share workflow templates as slash command files.

Format: Create a .md file with clear step-by-step instructions:

Type 5: Documentation

The ecosystem always needs better documentation. High-value contributions include:

  • Tutorials for specific use cases
  • Video walkthroughs (link from README)
  • Translation to other languages
  • Bug reports with reproduction steps

Quality Standards

The best contributions share these traits:

Tested: Include the date and Claude Code version you tested against.

Specific: “TypeScript React Hook for form validation” beats “useful coding skill.”

Minimal: The smallest configuration that solves the problem. No unnecessary rules.

Documented: README, installation steps, verification steps, and known limitations.

Licensed: Use a permissive license (MIT, Apache-2.0) for maximum adoption.

PR Process for Major Repos

  1. Fork the repository
  2. Add your entry in the appropriate category
  3. Include: name, URL, one-line description, star count
  4. Submit PR with title: “Add [tool-name] to [category]”

claude-code-templates

  1. Fork the repository
  2. Add your template in the matching directory (agents/, commands/, mcps/, etc.)
  3. Follow the existing file format
  4. Test via npx claude-code-templates@latest locally
  5. Submit PR

awesome-mcp-servers

  1. Fork the repository
  2. Add your server in the appropriate category
  3. Include: name, description, language, link
  4. Verify the server runs and tools work
  5. Submit PR

Building for Adoption

Tips from studying the most-starred ecosystem repos:

  1. Solve a real pain point. The andrej-karpathy-skills repo has 72K+ stars because “Don’t Assume” fixes real problems.

  2. Make installation trivial. ccusage runs with npx ccusage — no install step.

  3. Show results. Include before/after examples or screenshots.

  4. Keep scope tight. claude-code-docs does one thing (offline docs) and does it well.

  5. Maintain actively. Respond to issues, merge PRs, update for new Claude Code versions.

Do I need permission to build ecosystem tools?

No. Claude Code’s extension points (CLAUDE.md, hooks, commands, MCP) are open by design. Build freely.

What if my contribution duplicates an existing tool?

Check the curated lists first. If your tool has a meaningfully different approach or solves the problem better, contribute it and explain the difference.
